Fact-Checking Trump’s Denton, Durant and Mobile Speeches: Gas, Jobs, Iran and More

on

We checked 48 claims from President Donald Trump’s October 1-2, 2026 speeches in Denton, Texas; Durant, Oklahoma; and Mobile, Alabama, using government data, court and congressional records, and independent fact-checkers. Several claims held up: record median household income, record exports, Xi Jinping’s recent visit, the G7 diesel agreement and a sharp drop in the murder rate. Others were stretched, such as the number of jobs, truck output, the cost of the Iran war and the federal share of an Alabama bridge. A handful were flatly wrong, including that gasoline is cheaper than under Biden, that prices are “coming down rapidly,” that Democrats have not cast a single vote for voter ID, and that Iran’s inflation is above 300%. Trump also gave different numbers for the same claim from one speech to the next. Assistance from Claude AI.

How to read the ratings: ✅ Accurate | ⚠️ Misleading or missing important context | ❌ False | ℹ️ Unverifiable from the sources we could find.

1. Jobs and Manufacturing

“More people are working than at any time in history, by far.”

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The most recent jobs report, released October 2, showed payrolls up only 29,000 in September, after an average gain of 45,000 a month over the prior 12 months, with unemployment at 4.2% (Bureau of Labor Statistics [BLS], 2026a). The household survey counted about 163.2 million employed people in September 2026, below the 163.7 million counted in September 2025 (BLS, 2026b). A trade publication reported that the economy added 807,000 jobs after Trump returned to office in January 2025 while manufacturing employment fell by 35,000 over that period (FreightWaves, 2026). “By far” is not supported; job growth has slowed sharply.

“More than one million private-sector jobs since I took office.”

Said in: Durant | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The White House has used this figure (FreightWaves, 2026), but total job growth over the period was about 807,000 and has slowed to a trickle (BLS, 2026a; FreightWaves, 2026). A private-sector count can exceed total job growth because federal employment was cut, but the figure is presented without that context.

“60,000 new manufacturing jobs this year.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ✅ Largely accurate, with context

BLS reported manufacturing employment up 72,000 since a recent low in December 2025 (BLS, 2026a). However, an August analysis found the industry had still lost about 62,000 jobs since January 2025 and remained below its 2023 peak, with gains concentrated in metals and transportation equipment while food, furniture and plastics lost jobs (Washington Post, 2026, as cited by Alaska Dispatch News).

Peterbilt makes “200 trucks a day.”

Said in: Denton, Durant | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The Dallas Fed reported in January 2026 that the Denton plant employs over 3,000 people across two shifts and turns out about 163 heavy-duty trucks a day (Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, 2026). We found no source for 200. Trump also mixed up “a year” and “a day” in his own anecdote.

Tariffs created “1,000 new jobs and a third shift” at Peterbilt.

Said in: Denton (via worker Sarah Renshaw), Durant | Verdict: ℹ️ Partly unverified

A White House official credited the administration’s policies with more than 1,000 additional jobs at Denton and more than 2,000 across PACCAR’s U.S. operations (FreightWaves, 2026). A worker at the plant repeated the 1,000 figure on stage. We found no independent confirmation of a third shift, and no evidence separating tariff effects from a freight-market recovery.

Heavy-truck manufacturing “up 31%” and shipments at “an all-time high.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

Truck orders have surged, with 2026 Class 8 orders up 120% through July and calendar-year production essentially sold out (FreightWaves, 2026b). But orders are not shipments. Class 8 retail sales were still 12.9% lower year-to-date through June (TT News, 2026). We found no source showing record shipments.

2. Incomes, Poverty, Markets and Trade

“Real median household income is the highest ever.”

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ✅ Accurate

The Census Bureau reported that real median household income was $87,460 in 2025, the highest on record dating back to 1967 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026a). Context: the data cover calendar 2025, before the Iran war’s price shocks, and some experts warned next year’s numbers could look worse (Stateline, 2026).

Poverty is at “the lowest rate ever,” including for African American, Hispanic and Native American Americans.

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ⚠️ Mostly accurate, partly unverified

The official poverty rate fell to 10.2%, the lowest in the bureau’s records, and child poverty and Hispanic poverty (13.9%) were record lows (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026a, 2026b). The broader Supplemental Poverty Measure was unchanged at 13.1% (Stateline, 2026). We could not confirm record lows for Black or Native American poverty in 2025; Black poverty’s previous record low was in 2022.

“81” (Denton, Durant) or “82” (Mobile) stock-market record highs “in a year and a half.”

Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The count depends on the start date. One analysis reported 64 S&P 500 records since January 2025 and 74 if counting from the November 2024 election, as of early August (Meaww, 2026; secondary source). Eighty-one is plausible if counted from the election, but that is nearly two years, not “a year and a half.” His claim that 401(k)s are up “40%” is unverified.

“$21 trillion invested in 15 months,” versus “less than $1 trillion” or “half a trillion” under Biden.

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False as stated

PolitiFact rated similar claims false, noting the White House’s own list totaled about $9.6 trillion in pledges (PolitiFact, 2025). Bloomberg Economics found about $7 trillion could be considered real investment pledges and more than $250 billion had been announced before Trump took office (Bloomberg, 2025). CBS found no documentation approaching $21 trillion and noted federal data showed actual corporate investment roughly in line with the prior year (CBS News, 2025). The Biden comparison is also unsupported.

“American exports are at the highest level in history.”

Said in: All three | Verdict: ✅ Accurate

Census and BEA reported record exports of $327.1 billion in April 2026 (Dallas Express, 2026; secondary source for the federal release).

The trade deficit with China is “the lowest in 44 years.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The goods deficit with China fell from $382 billion in 2022 to $202 billion in 2025, with $33 billion in the first quarter of 2026 (Statista, n.d.). That is a large drop, but we found no evidence it is the lowest in 44 years, and an annual deficit of $202 billion remains far above the deficits of the 1980s and 1990s.

3. Gas, Prices and Inflation

Gasoline is “lower than it was with Biden.”

Said in: Denton, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False

AAA’s national average was $4.41 on October 1, compared with about $3.16 a year earlier, and September 2026 set a record for the month at $4.33 (AAA, 2026; WRNJ Radio, 2026). AAA said pump prices were the highest on record for this time of year. The $1.95 and $1.85 gas prices Trump recalled in Iowa are an old anecdote, not current prices.

Prices are “coming down rapidly” and “way down.”

Said in: Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False

Consumer prices rose 3.4% over the 12 months ending in August; energy rose 16.3% and gasoline about 27% (BLS, 2026c; Fin Channel, 2026). Core inflation, excluding food and energy, was 2.4% (BLS, 2026c).

Biden-era inflation was “the worst in history.”

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ⚠️ Overstated

Inflation peaked at 9.1% in June 2022, the largest 12-month increase since November 1981 (BLS, 2022). It was the worst in about 40 years, not in history.

“Eggs are cheaper than they were five years ago.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

A dozen Grade A large eggs averaged $2.19 in July 2026, versus $1.67 on average in 2021 (US Inflation Calculator, 2026). In nominal dollars they are more expensive; adjusted for inflation, 2021 prices equal about $2.97 in 2026 dollars (OfficialData.org, n.d.), so eggs are cheaper in real terms.

Oil is “at 90,” versus predictions of $300-$400.

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ✅ Accurate on today’s price

AAA said crude was back in the $90 range (WRNJ Radio, 2026). Oil spiked to nearly $120 earlier in the war (Euronews, 2026a). We could not verify the $300-$400 predictions.

Europe agreed to release diesel, and diesel is “already coming down.”

Said in: Mobile | Verdict: ✅ Release is accurate; ℹ️ price claim unverified

The G7 agreed on October 2 to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products over four months, with a “front-loaded” diesel release in the first 20 days (Associated Press, 2026e). The U.S. diesel price had recently hit records (Associated Press, 2026e). We found no data showing it was already falling.

4. Taxes and Health Care

“No tax on Social Security” and the estate tax is gone for farms.

Said in: All three | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The 2025 law did not eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits; it created a temporary $6,000 deduction for people 65 and older, regardless of whether they collect benefits (Hahn, 2026). It also raised the estate-tax exemption to $15 million per person and $30 million per couple (Tuberville, 2025), which shields most farms but does not abolish the tax. Few farms were caught by the old estate tax (Oklahoma Farm Report, 2025).

The “$5,000 Trump Dividend.”

Said in: Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading on financing

A $5,000 check for every adult citizen would cost about $1.2 trillion (Euronews, 2026b; Northeast Times, 2026). Cato calculated it at about $1.3 trillion, nearly five times net 2025 tariff revenue of $264 billion, and said net tariff revenue has been negative since May because the government has had to refund tariffs the Supreme Court invalidated (Cato Institute, 2026). Trump’s own “about $1 trillion” is close to the estimates, but the claim that tariff revenue and “$21 trillion” of investment make it easy is not. It would also require Congress, and earlier “dividend” promises never materialized (Northeast Times, 2026).

Nearly 1 million Obamacare “refund” checks of $500 went out.

Said in: Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ✅ Checks are real; ⚠️ framing is contested

The Treasury began mailing checks on September 30 to about 950,000 people on HealthCare.gov in 30 states who do not receive premium subsidies (The Hill, 2026; Newsweek, 2026a). The money comes from a surplus of exchange user fees (The Hill, 2026). MIT economist Jonathan Gruber called the “overcharge” framing misleading (Newsweek, 2026a). Trump’s “nearly 150,000 families in Texas and Oklahoma” is unverified.

Drug-price cuts of “300, 400, 500, 600 and even 700%.”

Said in: Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False as stated

A price cannot fall by more than 100%, which would mean free (CNN, 2025). The administration did sign “most favored nation” agreements with drug makers, but consumer advocates say the effects on most Americans’ prices are limited (Public Citizen, 2026). The “one-eighth of 1%” first-term figure is unverified.

The nitrogen-oxide rollback “alone will cut $6,000 per truck.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

The EPA estimated savings of up to $6,000 per vehicle, mostly from reducing emissions-warranty requirements, in a proposal issued July 9, not a final rule (Transport Topics, 2026). The proposal leaves the tailpipe standard in place and the agency says it keeps nearly 90% of the expected reductions (Heavy Duty Trucking, 2026).

5. Federal Spending and Local Projects

The Fed spent “$4 billion” (Durant) or “$3.5 billion” (Mobile) on a renovation that “could have been done for $25 million.”

Verdict: ❌ False

The Fed puts the project at $2.5 billion, up from $1.9 billion (Associated Press, 2025). When Trump claimed $3.1 billion in 2025, Fed Chair Powell said the figure included a building renovated years earlier (Associated Press, 2025). The $25 million figure has no support, and Trump gave $4 billion, $3.5 billion and “a $3 billion overrun” in three different places.

“I just won in the Supreme Court” on the ballroom, and a judge said “let the taxpayer pay.”

Said in: Durant | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

On August 31 the court allowed construction to continue while lawsuits proceed, finding the National Trust likely lacked standing (Associated Press, 2026f). That is not a final ruling on the merits. Trump says the $400 million cost is privately funded, but contractor invoices obtained by the Washington Post show $600 million, with taxpayers covering about half (Philadelphia Inquirer, 2026).

The I-10 Mobile River Bridge is “the largest infrastructure project in Alabama history” funded by “$3 billion from the Trump administration.”

Said in: Mobile | Verdict: ⚠️ Largest is accurate; the $3 billion is misleading

State officials call it the largest in state history (Alabama Reporter, 2026). But the federal contribution is mostly a loan: up to $2.52 billion in federal financing to be repaid with toll revenue (Alabama Reporter, 2026), plus a $550 million grant finalized in 2025 (U.S. Department of Transportation, 2025).

Alabama investments from Mercedes ($4 billion), Eli Lilly ($6 billion) and ArcelorMittal ($1.2 billion).

Said in: Mobile | Verdict: ✅ Accurate, with context

Lilly announced more than $6 billion in Huntsville, with construction expected from 2026 to 2032 (City of Huntsville, n.d.) and about 450 jobs (Manufacturing Dive, 2025). ArcelorMittal’s $1.2 billion Mobile County plant was among 2025’s largest announcements (Business Alabama, 2026). Mercedes announced another $4 billion in Tuscaloosa County by 2030 (Trade and Industry Development, 2026). These are announced commitments, several made before the speech. U.S. Steel’s $475 million could not be verified.

Fannie Mae’s offices are moving from San Francisco to Birmingham.

Said in: Mobile | Verdict: ✅ Accurate, with context

Sen. Tuberville announced in December 2025 that Fannie Mae’s San Francisco office would move to Birmingham, with “hundreds of jobs” (Alabama Daily News, 2025). It is a regional office; Fannie Mae is headquartered in Washington, D.C. (Alabama Daily News, 2025).

Texas oil production is “the highest level in history by far.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ❌ False as stated

An industry group’s analysis of federal data put Texas crude at about 5.8 million barrels a day, “near record levels” similar to those set in October 2024 (Texas Oil & Gas Association, 2026). That is before Trump took office and not “by far.” Texas Railroad Commission data show lease crude output below year-earlier levels (Railroad Commission of Texas, 2026).

6. War and Foreign Policy

The Venezuela raid: “lost nobody,” “one pilot injured,” and a war that lasted 48, 140 or 148 minutes.

Verdict: ⚠️ Mixed

  • ✅ No U.S. service members were killed (Associated Press, 2026a).
  • ⚠️ Seven were injured, not one, and one helicopter was hit (Fox News, 2026).
  • ⚠️ Defense Secretary Hegseth said the raid lasted less than 30 minutes (Associated Press, 2026a). Trump gave 48, “a day,” 140 and 148 minutes in different places, and the 18 minutes he cited for Maduro’s capture is a different measure.
  • ✅ The helicopter pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 5 Eric Slover, did receive the Medal of Honor in February (Associated Press, 2026b).

Maduro “emptied his prisons” into the United States.

Verdict: ❌ No evidence

PolitiFact rated the same claim false, quoting experts who found no evidence the Venezuelan government sent prisoners to the United States (PolitiFact, 2024).

Drugs coming by sea are “down 97%.”

Said in: Durant | Verdict: ❌ Unsupported

Seizure statistics do not measure total drug flow, and fact-checkers found federal data do not support the claim (FactCheck.org, n.d.; Associated Press, 2026c).

The U.S. has lost “18” people in the Iran war.

Said in: Mobile | Verdict: ⚠️ Understated

The Pentagon’s count was at least 19 dead and more than 860 wounded as of October 1 (Washington Post, 2026; Newsweek, 2026b). The Pentagon had reduced its official toll from 18 to 14 in July by reclassifying deaths (ABC News, 2026), and the Post reported officials acknowledged at least 22 troops had died in the region (Newsweek, 2026b).

Iran has “312%” (Denton) or “310%” (Mobile) inflation.

Verdict: ❌ False

Iran’s central bank put annual inflation at about 58% in June, and the IMF projected about 69% for 2026 (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, 2026). The Wall Street Journal cited about 80% (as summarized by PJ Media, 2026). Even the highest estimates are a quarter of what Trump said.

Iran has “no navy, no air force” and “159 ships are at the bottom of the sea.”

Verdict: ⚠️ Overstated

U.S. forces have destroyed many Iranian vessels, but analysts say the navy is damaged, not gone (National Security Journal, 2026). We could not verify “159.” Iran continues to attack tankers (Foreign Policy, 2026).

“Iran hasn’t had one ship get through” the blockade, and oil is flowing.

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ✅ Largely accurate

The U.S. reimposed its blockade on July 14, has redirected 125 vessels and disabled three (United Against Nuclear Iran, 2026), and no Iranian crude has passed the line since mid-July (PJ Media, 2026, citing Kpler). Gulf exports have recovered to about 13 million barrels a day with U.S. escorts (CNN, 2026). Iran still strikes tankers, and three were hit in one week (Foreign Policy, 2026).

The war will end “very soon,” “probably right after the election.”

Verdict: ℹ️ A prediction, not a checkable claim

The war began February 28 (Newsweek, 2026b), more than seven months ago. Trump’s own “two or three weeks” and “four to six weeks” estimates have been surpassed many times. The Pentagon declared the first phase over on July 7, but fighting resumed (ABC News, 2026).

“Xi just left.”

Verdict: ✅ Accurate

Xi made a state visit to Washington September 23-25 (South China Morning Post, 2026). Reports described a subdued summit with a trade-truce extension but no progress on Iran, Taiwan or AI (To Vima, 2026).

7. Immigration, Crime and the National Guard

“Zero illegal aliens” entered in the past 17 months.

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False

CBP reported 16 consecutive months of zero releases by Border Patrol, but also 8,870 southwest-border apprehensions in August alone (WichitaLiberty.org, 2026, summarizing CBP data). FactCheck.org concluded Trump appears to confuse zero releases with zero entries (WichitaLiberty.org, 2026). Even critics of Biden’s policies do not claim zero crossings.

25 million people entered illegally under Biden.

Verdict: ❌ Unsupported

A House Republican estimate cited in the Washington Examiner put the number let in at about 5.3 million, including possible asylum seekers (Washington Examiner, 2026).

The murder rate is the lowest in about 125 years.

Said in: All three | Verdict: ✅ Largely accurate

A nonpartisan group estimated that the 2025 homicide rate in 30 large cities was the lowest since 1900 (Council on Criminal Justice, as reported by WTOP, 2026), and a policy group’s analysis of FBI data put the 2025 national murder rate at 4.1 per 100,000, tied for the lowest recorded (America First Policy Institute, 2026; advocacy source). Trump’s broader claim of the “best crime numbers” since 1900 is not something the data measure.

National Guard deployments cut crime 82% in Memphis, 83% in New Orleans, and over 80% (and 91% for murder) in Washington.

Verdict: ⚠️ Overstated

D.C. had nine murders in early 2026 versus 27 in the same period a year before, but crime was already falling before the Guard arrived (theGrio, 2026). The White House itself cited a 62% drop in D.C. homicides (KUTV, 2026). Researchers have not found a link between the Guard and the homicide decline (WTOP, 2026), and Media Bias/Fact Check rated similar claims “blatant lie” (Media Bias/Fact Check, 2026).

8. Elections and Candidates

Trump is “the only one” to win all 77 Oklahoma counties; Reagan was second with 56.

Said in: Denton, Durant | Verdict: ❌ False; the three-win claim is ✅ accurate

Trump did win all 77 counties in 2016, 2020 and 2024 (Oklahoma Voice, 2024), but he was not the first: George W. Bush, John McCain and Mitt Romney also swept them, and Reagan won 58 counties in 1980 and 74 in 1984 (PolitiFact, 2024).

“Highest vote in Republican Party history,” and the “real number was 85 or 87 million.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ✅ first part; ❌ second part

Trump received 77.3 million votes in 2024, the most ever for a Republican, though Joe Biden’s 81.2 million in 2020 remains the overall record (Fox 7 Austin, 2025). We found no evidence for 85 to 87 million.

Talarico is a vegan who throws up after barbecue.

Said in: Denton, Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False

PolitiFact found Talarico is not a vegan; he urged less meat consumption in 2022 and has been photographed eating meat (PolitiFact, 2026). We found no evidence of the barbecue anecdote. On the politics: a Fox News poll released October 2 had Talarico ahead 51% to 49%, within the margin of error (Fox 7 Austin, 2026).

Spencer Pratt’s opponent “surged” after the election “because they cheat.”

Said in: Denton | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

In the Los Angeles primary, Bass finished first with 34.7%, Nithya Raman second with 28.5% and Pratt third with 26.7% after a late wave of mail ballots; Republicans alleged fraud (NewsChannel 9, 2026). Late-counted mail ballots are routine in California, and we found no substantiated fraud claim.

Democrats “put up” a second Dan Sullivan in Alaska.

Said in: Durant | Verdict: ⚠️ Misleading

There are two Dan Sullivans on the ballot, and the Alaska Supreme Court ordered the challenger placed on it (KTOO, 2026). But the challenger, a retired teacher from Petersburg, is a registered Republican; Republicans have called his candidacy a “sham” (Associated Press, 2026d). We found no reporting that Democrats recruited him.

“Not one Democrat” voted for voter ID or proof of citizenship; the SAVE America Act is “very close.”

Said in: Durant, Mobile | Verdict: ❌ False on votes; ⚠️ misleading on status

The House passed the SAVE America Act 218-213 in February with a single Democrat voting yes (Daily Signal, 2026; Mahomet Daily, 2026), and four Democrats had supported the earlier SAVE Act in 2025 (Washington Times, 2026). In the Senate the bill failed to reach the 60 votes needed on March 26 and an attempt to attach it to a budget bill also failed (Democracy Docket, 2026; American Democracy Minute, 2026). “Very close” is not what the record shows.

Numbers That Changed Between Speeches

From the transcripts themselves:
– Venezuela raid length: 48 minutes, “a day,” 140 minutes, 148 minutes and “about 18 minutes” for Maduro’s capture.
– Democratic tax increase: “$4 trillion” in Durant; “$5 trillion” in Mobile.
– Stock records: 81 in Denton and Durant; 82 in Mobile.
– Zero illegal entries: 15 months (Mobile, first mention) and 17 months (Denton, Durant, Mobile).
– Fed renovation: $4 billion (Durant), $3.5 billion (Mobile), and a “$3 billion cost overrun” (Durant).
– Iran inflation: 312% (Denton), “about 310%” (Mobile).

Claims We Could Not Verify (ℹ️)

  • Oklahoma’s planned aluminum plant being “the largest in the world, perhaps.”
  • 11,888 “killers” removed from the country.
  • Somalia’s “98% unemployment.”
  • Mike Mazzei saving taxpayers “$10 billion.”
  • Manufacturing wages up “nearly $4,000” since January 2025.
  • Record-low poverty for Black and Native Americans in 2025.
  • U.S. Steel investing $475 million in Birmingham.
  • Nearly 150,000 families in Texas and Oklahoma receiving Obamacare refunds.
  • That Saudi Arabia’s leader told Trump the U.S. was “dead” before he took office.
