Charts of household income and poverty rate for counties in Kansas.
The United States Census Bureau gathers statistics in a program called Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates, or SAIPE. The data for 2021 is now available. I’ve gathered it and created charts.
The first chart shows median household income for each county in Kansas from 2003 through 2021. I have arranged the counties in a grid that approximates their geographical location within the state. Shading shows the 90 percent confidence interval, meaning that the Census Bureau believes that the actual values lie within this range with 90 percent certainty. This is important, as the Bureau gathers this data through survey techniques, not a census. The Bureau does not adjust these dollar values for inflation.

Chart 2 presents the same median household income data but plotted as the difference from the statewide value. Therefore, it is easy to see whether counties are above or below the statewide value.
Chart 3 presents the poverty rate for all ages of residents, plotted as the difference from the statewide value. As with chart 2, it is easy to see whether counties are above or below the statewide poverty rate.
